So once again the BAFTA Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is up for grabs, this is the early stage though, where a bunch of top directors, producers, casting directors, actors and journalists come together to decide the longlist of nominees. Past winners have included James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart, Noel Clarke and last year, Tom Hardy.
What really makes this BAFTA unique is that the ultimate decision is down to public vote.
This year the acting contingent comprised of Simon Pegg and Sienna Miller.
Now, like many people of my age and interests Simon Pegg, to me, is somewhat of a legend. I mean: Spaced, Big Train, Big Nothing, Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Run Fatboy Run, How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, Paul, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, what’s not to like? Well, Big Nothing I suppose, but that’s not the point – all this success and he’s no suave CGI-good-looking born-into-greatness hollywood type, he’s one of us damnit!
You can see, it’s possible that my enthusiasm is unhealthy. Point in case; Sienna Miller. Possibly the most naturally beautiful person I have ever photographed, right there, front and centre in the picture, she was positively radient and giggling sweetly, and all I’ve gone on about in this blog is bloody Pegg!
In addition to this, some less well known faces yet equally impressive (and herein ignored) members of the jury included Harry Potter director, David Yates. Producer of such greats as The History Boys and The Last King of Scotland Allon Reich and casting director Nina Gold (The King’s Speech).
Anyway, I managed to restrain my inner fanboy when I spoke to Mr Pegg briefly after we’d finished shooting, instead I mentioned to a tweet of his (this is socially acceptable stalking, I checked) where he mentioned his love of snowboard movies made by a couple of friends of mine.
‘Oh cool’ he said.
YES! Simon Pegg thinks I’m cool!
…I’ll stop now.
